What does that mean? is a SELCOtv series designed to define technology & library terminology. Sometimes the term will be a piece of technology jargon. Sometimes it will be libraryspeak. And still other times, it might be one of those terms that state and federal bureaucracies just love to create. Regardless, What does that mean? will have you understanding whatever jargon the library and tech world can throw at you.

Q: What is SELCOtv?
A: SELCOtv is your place for video on all things SELCO. Meeting video, training, and more are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Q. What kind of video does SELCO create?
A: SELCOtv videos generally fall into three categories:

Training--Videos that demonstrate or explain how to use SELCO services. While we are not there yet, our goal is to have online video equivalents for all the training SELCO provides. We don't see online video as a replacement for face-to-training, of course. It's just another way for our users to get the information.
Meetings--As a consortia of over 85 Online Libraries, we have a lot of meetings at SELCO. In the interest of transparency, we record them and post them for all to see.
Library Resources--A bit of a catch-all, this category features videos on topics of interest to libraries which may or may not be SELCO-specific.

Q. How long are the videos?
A. With the exception of meeting videos, all videos come in under 10 minutes with most running around five. Meeting videos are longer, of course, since no one has a 10 minute meeting. Videos of meetings are usually broken up into three or four segments which can be viewed separately to improve performance.

Q. Do I need to install any software to watch a video?
A. No. All videos will play in your web browser.

Q. How is SELCO managing to store and display all this video without using up the bandwidth Online Libraries need to use services such as the Integrated Library System?
A: We don't! All SELCOtv video is hosted by blip.tv, a video hosting service that allows anyone to upload content for streaming. It's very similar to YouTube but, for a variety of technical reasons, is better suited to host our video. Although we sometimes embed the video in our website so it looks like it's coming from us, it's really coming from blip. Our bandwidth is unaffected and we don't need to allocate any storage for SELCOtv.

Q. How often do you release new episodes?
A. Our goal is to release two per week, not counting meeting videos which come out as needed.
